The Importance of Having a Pain and Neuropathy Treatment System

Having a pain and neuropathy treatment system provides for more measurable results!

One of the most frustrating things for patients and doctors alike is not having adequate treatment plans for patients who suffer from peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain.Too often, a haphazard approach is taken both by patients and their professionals early on, and the net result is failure, or possibly worsening of the underlying pain and neuropathy. When specific formulas are followed, you know what to expect, and how to measure your progress. Having a pain and neuropathy treatment system provides for more measurable results!

For example, most patients who suffer from diabetic neuropathy know when they keep their fasting blood sugars within a healthy range, their neuropathy reacts much better. Conversely, when blood sugars are out of control due to poor dietary systems the net result is worsening of their neuropathy. And the same holds true for other facets of treatment. For example having a personal system for regular, and scheduled exercise as well as stretching and rest can make a profound difference.

The timing of dietary supplements, and even medications can make a big difference. We know for example that regularity, in terms of time of day and spacing of dosages can make a huge difference for many.We also know that when treating with our homecare pain and neuropathy treatment systems at specific times makes a huge difference and leads to bigger improvements in quality of life.

So if you find yourself not progressing as much as you would like, work more on a system and game plan for yourself. Remember no two patients are the same. Some trial with your Doctors first is necessary to find out what works best for you. But the good news is having a treatment system to follow provides for more measurable pain and neuropathy treatment results!

Eating More Frequently May Manage Neuropathy & Weight Easier?

On the surface, a statement like that might seem wrong. After all, isn’t eating at the root of weight gain, obesity, and its complications? To a point, yes. This is especially true when we consume far more calories in one sitting then we need, and load our meals with carbohydrates and poor-quality fats. So eating more frequently may manage neuropathy and my weight easier?

Eating more frequently will stimulate your metabolism—or, how efficiently you burn versus store fat, keep your blood sugar more even, and actually help keep you warmer.

What I tell all my neuropathy patients—and, indeed, every patient—is to try to eat something not more than three hours apart.

But a little-known fact is that when we eat less frequently, we become much more efficient at storing fat rather than burning it. This is not to say periodic fasting isn’t helpful. Turns out it actually is.

So what does this have to do with managing peripheral neuropathy?

The bottom line is, eating more frequently will stimulate your metabolism—or, how efficiently you burn versus store fat, keep your blood sugar more even, and actually help keep you warmer. For patients who suffer from peripheral neuropathy, all of these things are crucial.

But this does not mean you can eat anything you want. What we do know is that by consuming relatively low amounts of carbohydrates in our meals, along with periodic low carb snacks, we become much more efficient metabolically. *Now, if you are an insulin-dependent diabetic, some of what I say here will not apply, so please be careful and work with your Doctor here.

What I tell all my patients is to try to eat something low carb (low carb meal or if a snack  some almonds, cashews, half a banana or apple, small salad with olive oil, small chia bar for example) not more than three hours apart. For example, you will start your breakfast with something like a protein shake, or a small serving of steel-cut oatmeal with a little added fat like Earth Balance, perhaps some berries. Approximately three hours later, you’ll have six to 10 almonds, or perhaps another lean, low-carbohydrate snack if nut allergies are a problem.

Again, this points out the need to work with well-trained neuropathy treatment professionals to truly manage your peripheral neuropathy and, indeed, your health in general.

“If your Pain & Neuropathy Treatment is so GOOD then Why doesn’t MY Doctor know about it?”

“If your Pain & Neuropathy Treatment is so GOOD then Why doesn’t MY Doctor know about it?” This is a question we answer every day.

The reality is, most physicians do everything they can to help their patients. Unfortunately, especially in practices that do not specialize, the doctors are oftentimes unaware of new and drug free systems and procedures that may be available to help their patients.

Now don’t get me wrong, oftentimes drugs a life-saving approach, and you should always defer these decisions to your well-trained medical professionals. You probably already know however that in many forms of chronic pain and especially peripheral neuropathy drug only therapy can be a dead end.

But unfortunately, drug therapy is the only training most medical professionals and facilities ever receive. Furthermore, we know the pharmaceutical industry is huge, with immense marketing budgets and constant bombardment of their messages not only to patients but doctors as well.

And this is not a new problem. I remember 30+ years ago having discussions with my medical doctor friends about this very issue. Many times intense pharmaceutical marketing makes their jobs more difficult, rather than easier.

But the good news is, we now know that many patients who combine drug therapy with the latest available neuropathy and chronic pain treatments do far better. Often times, these neuropathy patients are able to reduce and sometimes eliminate certain medications.

These specialized neuropathy chronic pain treatments include patient training and applications of special neuropathy treatment modalities.

Some of the biggest neuropathy treatment breakthroughs are occurring in electrotherapy, laser therapy, in other neurostimulatory techniques.

There are now many systems available to help patients deal more effectively with their neuropathy, pain, sleep and life disruption then ever before.

We are here to help you sort them out.

A Clear Neuropathy and Pain Treatment Pathway

When confronted with a a disabling diagnosis, too often patients and even doctors don’t know that good neuropathy and pain treatment is available.

Instead, many patients self-medicate, which may dampen the most bothersome symptoms. But problems arise when this is the only neuropathy and pain treatment approach.

You see, your clearest path to improving your life is to let us help identify, then correct the underlying causes of your particular issues wherever that is possible. You need a clear neuropathy and pain treatment pathway.

Sometimes of course, that’s not entirely possible, such as in the hereditary neuropathies like CMT of HNPP. But even in these cases a neuropathy and pain treatment plan or clear pathway is still better than playing “blind archery”!

Now some clinicians take a more fatalistic view. But not us. We will always address as many pieces of your unique situation as we possibly can. And yes, this includes patients with hereditary neuropathy too!

Some neuropathy and pain treatments have additive effects. But it’s not a simple as taking several pills and potions. Every patient is different, and programs must be individualized then monitored. Monitoring treatment is one of the only ways to know if your they are are achieving exactly what we design!

So how can you as the patient make sure all this is done? You’ve already taken a key first step by reading all about your treatment options here

And don’t neglect solid home care plans! Things like NDGen® neurostimulation in the clinic and in our home care kits to help normalize function and sooth your pain, tingling numbness and burning.

In the clinic, we have many tools to choose from too. This includes extensive manual therapies and physical therapy modalities including laser, and traction for spinal conditions.

But most importantly, you’ll have a clear neuropathy and pain treatment pathway outlined for you before your care ever begins!

Beyond Conventional Neuropathy Treatment

Ask yourself if “conventional” neuropathy treatment alone is making you better?

First (you probably already know this), medicines alone have been the primary or conventional neuropathy treatment. There are a lot of medications used to treat neuropathy and nerve pain. Treatments are essentially the same no matter the cause. Most current drug treatments are directed at altering nerve, brain, and pain receptors.

Do you still wonder, “Okay, so again, am I going to feel better?” Great question!

Can Conventional Neuropathy Treatment Cure Me?

Unfortunately, there is no known “cure” for many forms of neuropathy and nerve pain. However, there is much more beyond a medication only approach.

The biggest problem is, not enough patients and doctors are aware of new and often effective available treatments. This is one area our research is beginning to change.

Here’s a post about a holistic approach and moving beyond conventional neuropathy treatment, if you’d like to know more.

To provide the best care for our neuropathy and nerve pain patients, we usually have to embrace other options. Here are a few reasons why it’s so important to use the multiple modality approach.

  • Better pain relief
  • Less medications are often needed
  • Less side effects
  • Improved quality of life

These four reasons alone are enough, but there are others.

Here at NeuropathyDR that is part of our mission. We inform patients and doctors of evolving treatment options. Knowledgeable experts more and more use a variety of treatments to help neuropathy and nerve pain patients feel better, and lead a better life.

The key takeaway we’d like to share is, the choice is yours.

What can you do? Inform yourself, do your research, and know your options.

What About Laser Treatments?

Laser has been around since about 1960 or so when a now famous scientist produced these “focused light beams” in the laboratory. Laser treatments in some forms have actually been used in medicine for many years.

Now, lasers are everywhere, everything from CD Players, printers and measuring devices to military weapons. I’m sure you may even have seen a few of your own! These ultra focused light beams can be used at high intensity to seal tissue, aid surgeons dentists and dermatologists in their daily work with patients. And at lower intensity, they have had applications in pain and neuropathy treatment for some time too.

So what does laser have to do with neuropathy and pain treatment? Well, it could be that laser treatments are the “missing link” in some forms of neuropathy and pain treatment! One of our basic attempts in neuropathy and pain treatment is to do whatever can help safely and effectively boost our cells use of “energy”. Well, along with proper nutrition and electrotherapy, laser may aid energy production in damaged nerves. The way this may happen is fascinating, but way beyond the scope of this column.

No treatment works 100 percent of the time. And that is a key point to remember. Nowhere is this more apparent than in laser treatments for neuropathy. Even amongst laser treatment experts there’s often disagreement as to what makes good neuropathy and pain treatment. But some techniques and equipment are proving very effective while others are a complete waste! And this is exactly why we now have so many types of laser treatments available.

This even includes an home laser treatments you can actually sleep with to improve your laser treatment results for pain and perhaps wound healing as well.

The good news is more experience and research including our own is helping us find even better laser treatments than we have available today!

Always remember though, our team members go to great lengths every day to be sure we are up to date in the latest, and best forms of laser treatment for you and your family!

Treatment System

One of the most frustrating things for patients and doctors alike is not having adequate treatment plans for patients who suffer from peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain. We find most of the time with our new patients there has never been a real treatment system put into place.

When a piecemeal approach is taken both by patients and their professionals early on, and the net result is failure, or possibly worsening of the underlying neuropathy and chronic pain. Commonly this is the result of a number of factors and too often it’s failure to follow up on early milder issues.

But the good news is when specific formulas are followed, you know what to expect, and we then can know how to measure your progress.

For example, most patients who suffer from diabetic neuropathy know when they keep their blood sugars within a healthy range, their neuropathy and chronic pain improves.

Conversely, when blood sugars are out of control, most often due to poor diet the net result is poor.

And the same holds true for other many other health issues. For example having a personal treatment system including scheduled exercise, a firm diet plan (Get Yours HERE) as well as daily stretching and rest can make a profound difference.

The timing of dietary supplements, and even medications can make a big difference. We know for example that regularity, in terms of time of day and spacing of dosages can make a huge difference for many patients.

We also know that when treating with the NDGen treatment system at specific times makes a huge difference and leads to bigger improvements in quality of life.

So if you find yourself not progressing as much as you would like, let us help you develop a real treatment system or “game plan” for yourself.

Remember no two patients are the same. Some trial and error is necessary to find out what works best for you.

But the good news is having a treatment system to follow provides for more measurable results!

Physical Activity, Neuropathy and Chronic Pain Patients

While your pain may make any kind of physical activity the furthest thing from your mind, a good clinician can greatly increase your potential for rehabilitation. Your neuropathy does not have to be a life sentence.

Peripheral neuropathy affects virtually every patient differently. Some neuropathy patients suffer strictly from nerve pain, some have issues with numbness, and still others have issues with mobility or some combination of symptoms.

Any neuropathy symptom can make functioning and carrying on a normal life virtually impossible.

If you suffer from any of these issues:

· Pain
· Weakness or numbness
· Increased nerve sensitivity
· Abnormal gait when you walk
· Decreased endurance
· Limited range of motion
· Difficulty keeping your balance
· Problems with bracing yourself
· Joints that are stiff or contracted…

A good therapist, chiropractor, or osteopathic physician may be able to help you.  Clinicians who specialize in treating neuropathy patients, like our NeuropathyDR® therapists and chiropractors, will have a strong knowledge base when it comes to addressing whatever your particular neuropathy symptoms happen to be.

What To Expect

We will do a complete history and physical, and find out where you need the most assistance and what course of treatment will work best for you. Therapy can be a crucial step to increase the likelihood of rehabilitation from your peripheral neuropathy.

Be sure to find a clinician with expertise in treating neuropathy patients.  A qualified clinician will be able to develop a treatment regimen that won’t make your neuropathy symptoms worse.

One thing to remember – in order for your insurance to pay for therapy treatment, you will more than likely need a prescription from your treating physician.

Therapy Treatment Options

Some clinicians will attack your particular issues directly or they may opt to work indirectly and work around the underlying problem to first address whatever your particular deficits may be.  If you have balance issues, they may work to build your muscle strength and allow you to be more grounded.

Every patient is different.  What worked for one may not work for the next.  A good clinician will take the time to fully understand your particular issues and prescribe a treatment regimen that addresses the areas where you need the most assistance and that will show the best opportunity for improvement.

If you’ve never sought treatment before, you may not really understand what they do.  Here are some basic treatment techniques used in a therapy regimen that might help you:

· Soft tissue manipulation techniques
· Peripheral and/or spinal mobilization
· Thermal treatments
· Electrical stimulation
· Ultrasound
· Near infrared phototherapy
· Balance systems
· Individualized therapeutic exercise
· Functional activities

Seeing an expert can give you a chance at a positive outcome and improve your ability to function normally. Give yourself every opportunity to get your life back and live beyond your peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain issues.

We hope you found this information helpful and you take steps today to find a NeuropathyDR® practitioner in your area. Be an informed patient.

Overcome Anxiety and Depression with Good Neuropathy Treatment

One of the things that is perhaps universal among patients who suffer from chronic pain and neuropathy is the manifestation of both anxiety and depression. But good neuropathy treatment can go a long way towards helping patients overcome these feelings.

Unfortunately, these feelings often don’t receive the attention they deserve. What you may not know is that part of the development of anxiety and depression is the result of nervous system reactions. A solid neuropathy treatment plan often helps patients get back those feelings of well-being that can sometimes seem only a distant memory.

I’m firmly convinced that part of this development is simply sensitization of the nervous system to all the changes that peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain can bring. This is also why I am convinced EVERY neuropathy and chronic pain patient should own a home self-treatment kit as part of their neuropathy treatment plan.

These feelings of anxiety and depression are very common, and suffered by most neuropathy patients. But seldom are they talked about honestly and openly with family or clinicians.

Yes, quite frankly, this is a mistake.

There ARE a couple simple things you can do immediately that will help.

First of all, realize there’s often lots you can control about your health—and some things you can’t. Resign yourself to that fact once and for all. Meditate or pray on this one if need be, as it really helps! It’s one of the great paradoxes of life—however, once accepted as fact, it can make a tremendous difference in your level of mental health and well-being.

And for everything you can change, such as your diet, lifestyle, mental health habits, attitude, etc… accept one hundred percent responsibility right now! Each of these factors can make or break your neuropathy treatment plan!

Along these lines, there are several other things I suggest you explore to get the most out of your neuropathy treatment. Number one, make sure you have as simple and low stress a lifestyle as you possibly can.

I have seen many patients make extensive progress on the road back to health by simply practicing everything we’ve said in the last few paragraphs.

I have written extensively about designating enough “Me” time. It’s a mistake to neglect yourself above others—and this includes parents, relatives, and children.

Number two: with severe depression including thoughts of suicide, you need professional guidance immediately!

Ask for help, and make sure you get it. Today!

Where these are unavailable, a trusted friend, clergy member, or advisor may be the next best thing.

And as always, discuss the best neuropathy treatment options available to you with your treating clinician. The sooner you get on the road to wellness, the better you will find that you feel.

Above all, recognize you are not alone.

So what does laser have to do with neuropathy treatment?

Well, it could be that laser therapy is the “missing link” in some forms of neuropathy treatment!

As we discuss together frequently, no neuropathy treatment works 100 percent of the time. And that is a key point to remember. We also have talked about effective neuropathy treatment being the result of working only with highly trained neuropathy treatment professionals.

And nowhere is this more apparent than in laser treatments for neuropathy. Even amongst laser neuropathy treatment experts there’s often disagreement as to what makes good neuropathy treatment.
