Dietary “First Aid”

There really is some simple dietary first aid. Here’s how to get started.

This past week, you probably ate and drank some things you ordinarily wouldn’t.
Our advice? Always enjoy yourself but just don’t go crazy.

Why? Because it’s a whole lot easier to get back on course if you only stray a little.

Focus instead on the 99+ percent of your life, including following the NeuropathyDR Diet & Lifestyle Plan. And be sure to stay on track with your neuropathy home care kit care too!

But even if you stray from good neuropathy treatment habits even just a little sometimes you can feel really awful!

But there is good news! You can do both “prevention” and dietary first aid!

First of all, drink plenty of water if you go on “holiday”. It’s OK to sample different foods unless you are allergic or sensitive, but resist the temptation to go crazy!

Don’t drink alcohol at all if you have medication interactions, and be careful of overindulging in alcohol anyways, as it can irritate many forms of neuropathy & pain.

Make sure you take your prescribed supplements, and eat small frequent meals. Doing so will make it easier for you to stay on track if you do go to parties.

Now, if you wake up feeling lousy, don’t panic. Just get back on track ASAP with all your good self care.

A good Rescue Remedy if you really overdo is simply to do the BRAT Diet for 1 to a few days (small servings of Brown rice, Banana Tea and Applesauce). This is actually a good clearing diet for lots of people and can help you feel better faster after overindulging.

Also, be sure to be drinking enough water, and eating healthy all day (as we teach-minimal carb, adequate protein) every 2-3 hours.

Following the tips here, and your good self care you are more likely to really enjoy your holidays and time off a whole lot more!

Dietary “First Aid” for Your Neuropathy is a post from: Neuropathy | Neuropathy Doctors | Neuropathy Treatment | Neuropathy Treatments | Neuropathy Physical Therapists

A Real Strategy

It’s no secret, most of life’s issues can be dealt with more effectively by having a clear strategy. If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy or really any other form of chronic pain than you understand how difficult it can be manage this on a day-to-day basis.

One of the reasons for this is that by its definition chronic pain is insidious, meaning it tends to creep up slowly.

So like most patients for quite a long period of time you may have already tried a dozen or more medications.

But yet this entire time no one has helped you focus on the simpler things that can have enormous and often extraordinary benefits to your overall health, no matter what stage you’re at.

Specifically we’re talking about diet, meditation, mindfulness, stress reduction, and as much physical activity in which your condition will allow.

For those patients who have been seriously ill or recovering from surgery this simply may be getting up and about out of bed more often with assistance and at home physical therapy.

In this category I would also add the appropriate use of non-drug treatment modalities, physical therapy modalities, massage, using your NDGen kit and your wearable laser system.

Some of these of course are available in the clinic as well as at home.

What DOES not work is continually plying your body with more pills and potions available on-line without paying attention to everything else.

This is not to say of course that medications are not helpful. Often times these are extremely beneficial in helping to manage the pain and discomfort associated  when it can be at its very worst.

But for too many, simply relying on meds while ignoring the simplest but critical behaviors is doing you a tremendous disservice.

Many patients find that learning more about how these different tools like the NDGen and then redesigning a simpler life, along with reducing medications and their associated side effects are more appropriate self-care strategies that go a long way towards helping them improve the quality of their life.

That’s why we are here! Our entire team is standing by, ready to help when you are.

A Simpler Chronic Pain and Neuropathy Treatment Strategy. is a post from: Neuropathy | Neuropathy Doctors | Neuropathy Treatment | Neuropathy Treatments | Neuropathy Physical Therapists

It All Adds Up: Your Best Self-Care

Stay the course with your good health and your best self-care care habits, and over time everything becomes a little better!

One of the things patients and the BEST caregivers realize is that good treatment plans for patients with neuropathy and many forms of chronic pain can be simplified.

With simplification comes less stress AND expense.

Pulling this off means you must learn to be personally accountable, to you.

For example, we learned how easy the NeuropathyDR Diet with supplementation plans can be to follow. If you still don’t have a copy, you’ll find it in HERE. Many of you have told us how much better you feel JUST by following it!

Amazing as it is, we feel so much better  eating this way—and spending far less on groceries.

We also have talked about how important each key nutrient is, along with daily applications of neurostim and other key components of your  home care plan.

Every week is a little better until… something happens and you find yourself greeting off-track—lousy diet, not enough water, and not enough activity.

Maybe it was that wedding or party. Or weekend away. Or, worse yet, maybe some criticism from friends or relatives, targeting you for being so “good”.

Then you get to thinking, I can “cheat” on all this self-care and it won’t make a difference.

Nope, not at all…

Before you know it, a week or more has gone by and you find yourself sluggish again, in more pain, with poorer sleep…

So what’s up here? In reality, our bodies are “plastic”, but only to a point. And the older we get, the less this is true.

Miss a day of self-care—so what? But miss 2 or more, and before you know it, all hell has broken loose.

The fix for this is to tell yourself day after day that EVERYTHING matters, especially your good self-care.

So don’t let others sway or deter—stay the course with your good health and neuropathy care habits, and over time everything becomes a little better!

Remind yourself that it can take years to get sick, and repair takes time.

Just remember: everything you do matters!

Just Keep It Simple

Just Keep It Simple. Sage advice that so often works, but only if you pay attention. Too often patients are chasing this doctor or that, this new pill or that, in search of relief rather than getting to the bottom of what may be actually causing their issues

One of the things that is most serious but far too often ignored in cases of neuropathy, fibromyalgia, many forms of chronic pain and indeed many chronic illnesses is the impact that daily habits and of course our lifestyles have on both the prevention and progression of diseases and illnesses.

Too often, in our society there is a rush to look for a magic pill to cover up symptoms rather than to find out what is really going on that could be perpetuating or in fact causing chronic health issues.

The most common of course in our society now is lack of fitness and excess and poor food consumption. Plain and simple, this causes more disease than any other single factor.

So you would think the smartest thing to do would be to start here when dealing with neuropathy or other health problem. Unfortunately, we find patients are conditioned far too often chasing this doctor or that, this drug or that, in search of relief rather than getting to the bottom of what may be actually causing their neuropathy.

Now this is not to say that bad things don’t happen to good people. Of course they do! This is where some of the most amazing drugs and surgery have a very wonderful place. But for the vast majority of what we see in practice every day the solutions to so many health problems are often right under our noses!

But what are you TO DO?

The first thing to understand is that “everything” doesn’t make you sick. Too often patients fall into this dismal pattern of thinking, based upon popular press and media. Nothing could be further from the truth. Everything doesn’t make you sick but many poor things in combination certainly do!

The most common of these is surrounding yourself with poor food choices, lack of regular daily fitness, and filling your home with possible environmental toxins. If this is the case, then the starting point for you is obvious!

There is more than enough in our affiliated practices and on this site and our social media linked below to get and keep you on track!

Key Trace Elements

Let’s talk at some length about key trace elements…

Pills / vitamins woman

By definition, key trace elements are those essential nutrients, which are necessary for life and health but only in the tiniest amounts.

As with most nutrients, too much is not better. Neither is consuming large amounts of a single nutrient unless there is a genetic or other bona fide medical reason to do so.

So today let’s talk about the nutrient chromium. If you’ve ever seen stainless steel or shiny car parts, you probably know what chromium is. Just like copper and manganese, it is a metal. What you may not know is that most human beings in modern cultures probably get the majority of their chromium diet intake through cooking with stainless steel!

Part of this of course is because most people do not consume a diet that is naturally high in chromium.

The safest forms for human nutrition (trivalent) come from whole foods and are found in things such as broccoli (one of the highest sources) as well as coffee, potato and apple skins and nuts.

As we talk about all the time, having a large component of your diet from whole foods, which contain things like peels and skins provide some significant insurance against trace mineral deficiencies including chromium deficiency.

What you may not know however is, chromium appears to be essential for our bodies handling of blood sugar. In one particular form, that is GTF, which is short for glucose tolerance factor, this trace element may help to improve insulin (the hormone which lowers blood sugar) efficiency and potentiate insulin.

Now there is conflicting scientific evidence here, however enough research indicates that GTF is probably the safest supplement form and best included in supplementation in relatively low amounts on the order of not more than 100 µg per day.

In other words trivalent chromium helps us to process energy, particular carbohydrates and sugars from our food efficiently.

If you’ve read my other books you also understand that poor blood sugar control in the form of either diabetes or metabolic syndrome can cause peripheral neuropathy and a whole host of health disorders.

So by now the impact of chromium nutrition should be rather obvious. Without adequate amounts in our diet we are at risk for developing health risks related to blood sugar management yes and perhaps ultimately even peripheral neuropathy!

Let’s Talk About Eating Smart

Let’s talk about eating smart. One of the things that most patients with neuropathy—and many patients with chronic pain—eating smart by keeping well-fueled and well-hydrated goes a long way towards possibly reducing symptoms and improving the quality of life! Now, the reasons for this are many, and paying better attention to basic body needs dramatically improves the function of our brain and nervous system and thus how we feel.

Fotolia 39693338 M 188x300 Eating Smart to Improve Neuropathy and Chronic Pain

Paying better attention to basic body needs dramatically improves the function of our brain and nervous system

There are a couple of basic rules that serve most neuropathy and chronic pain patients very well.

First, let’s talk a little about water consumption. An easy rule of thumb is to consume one half your body weight in ounces during a 24-hour period. So if we weigh a hundred and eighty pounds, we should drink ninety ounces of water (or non-alcohol liquids) in a 24-hour period. Remember, coffee, tea, and alcohol can cause us to lose fluid more rapidly, so go easy here. Under no circumstances should diet or other soft drinks be consumed.

Next, the mainstay or proper fueling is eating every 2 to 3 hours maximum. Getting used to smaller meals, and adding low-carbohydrate snacks such as several nuts or one half of an apple or other low-carb fruit can help us feel much better. The reason for this is it helps us maintain normal blood sugar levels and helps us burn fat more efficiently. If you are NOT insulin dependent or on diabetes medication, intermittent fasting may actually be beneficial. Learn way more about diet with the ND Diet Plan.

Eating more frequently as long as it is low in carbs (except within an hour HEAVY exercise) makes us feel better—and helps fuel us much more efficiently.

Carb control is also what helps us fight things like diabetes and metabolic syndrome—that, as you already know, complicate many health problems and make neuropathy and pain worse.

Like everything, there are exceptions to these rules. For example, if you’re insulin-dependent, you need to match your insulin dosage against your carbohydrate consumption very carefully.

Likewise, if you suffer from kidney or heart disease, you may need to be more careful with fluid consumption. Always follow your doctor’s orders. Try these simple suggestions starting today, and see how much better you may feel within just a few days!

Make Better Treatment Decisions

It was not that long ago that neuropathy and chronic pain patients had very few treatment options. Now though, how can we all make better treatment decisions? For a very long time, health professionals just focused on drug therapy to calm neuropathy and pain symptoms.

Physical Therapy

When patients take action, lose weight, become more active, and cut out sugars and processed foods, their pain and “idiopathic” neuropathy often starts to improve!.

In fact, many patients AND their own doctors still believe this is the only approach to neuropathy and pain treatment. But you know better, and that is why you are here!

We now know that there is a place for active treatment in many forms of pain, especially neuropathy.

For example, we know the most common form of neuropathy is “idiopathic neuropathy” meaning, by definition, “no known cause”. Many cases formerly called “idiopathic” are, in fact, due to metabolic syndrome, an issue for many in modern society that, over many years, creates too much body fat and not enough lean muscle. This is sometimes still called pre-diabetes because without better lifestyle, food and activity decisions, many patients with metabolic syndrome will become diabetic!

*Drug-only neuropathy therapy alone will not change this.

But the good news is that when patients apply their own decisions to take action, lose weight, become more active, and cut out sugars and processed foods, their “idiopathic” may begin to improve, especially while using an active treatment system.

The sad part is, many doctors and patients still attempt to treat just with drugs to calm the symptoms like tingling, numbness and burning so many neuropathy patients suffer from. Worse yet, when patients are given high blood pressure or cholesterol lowering medication to treat metabolic syndrome this form of neuropathy can actually worsen!

Since 2008, we at NeuropathyDR have lead the way in informing neuropathy and chronic pain patients the impact their own health care and lifestyles decisions have upon their quality of life, and more! In the whole scheme of things, this approach to neuropathy treatment is relatively new.

So, what is a patient or their family to choose? Simply, we think patients need to learn all they can about real health! Real health comes from deciding to work a little more on it every day!

And, like it or not, the older we get, the more we all need to be proactive about our health—not less!

Know that our team of docs is with you all the way!

Better Home Care

Let’s Talk About Better Home Care You Can Use Today!

Move As Much As Possible! You don’t have to run a marathon, or even walk one. You don’t have to race a titanium frame bicycle. Just move the big muscles in your legs as often and as much as you possibly can. Exercise, even very gently at first, improves circulation. Improved blood flow to the legs and feet will help nourish damaged nerves.

A Warm Bath Can Do Wonders

Warm baths increase blood flow; reduce stress and aid in relaxation. All three of these benefits will make the pain a little easier to tolerate. But a word to the wise, check the water temperature with your elbow or your wrist before you get in the bathtub. The nerve damage in your feet makes them an unreliable source for judging temperature. Use a thermometer. We like 100 degrees Fahrenheit with some added minerals like Epsom salts (don’t be stingy) and antioxidants.

Take Targeted Supplements

Vitamins B-1, B-12, B-6 and folic acid are all vital to healthy nerves. We have found certain combinations in professionally tailored packages for each case often works best. In our clinics, we now use the NDGen® Metabolic Support Packs that Dr. John Hayes personally designed. If you eat a healthy diet, you may still not be getting the recommended daily amount of some vitamins and other nutrients. Be sure taking any supplements you self-prescribe won’t interact with any medications you’re taking.*

Control—or, Better Yet, Eliminate Your Alcohol Intake

High intake of alcohol is a toxin to your nerves. And if the nerves are already damaged, it’s even worse. Some people think that a drink a day is good for your health. We respectfully disagree. If you have nerve damage, that’s a chance you don’t need to take.  Don’t drink more than four alcoholic beverages a week (if you suffer from peripheral neuropathy; none would be even better).

Work More Closely With Us

Before you begin any self-care regimen or add supplements, herbs, or vitamins to your healthcare regimen, always schedule talk to us first. Virtually everything has some side effects, so make sure that what you’re planning to take won’t cause you more harm than good. *You can easily check for drug-nutrient interactions online. Special caution is advised in thyroid disease and cancer therapies during neuropathy care.

And Above All Else…

Don’t give up.  Self-care is vital to managing your pain or neuropathy.  While you may need a combination of these self-care tips and medication, sorting out yourself is not always wise. All it takes is a phone call to meet with the doctor that knows your case the best.

Your Toxic Exposures

One of the things that is new to many patients especially those who suffer from peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain is the effect that your toxic exposures can have.

For example, the average person is exposed to numerous chemicals everyday in our air, water, and even our food. Some of these substances may pass through the body harmlessly, yet others may linger in fatty tissues, creating a whole host of health problems. But this is tricky. With rare exception, most accumulations are slow or insidious. Exceptions could be exposure to large amounts of acute toxins, such as solvents.

Note these toxins can be anything from radon gas in the house to chemical pesticide residues on food, to antibiotic residues, which are now commonly present in water. Living healthily means you need to avoid as much toxic exposure from your environment and food as possible. So let’s talk about some of the most important things we can do.

Perhaps the most important source of toxins you can correct immediately is filtering your drinking water. We strongly recommend a pitcher or whole house type water filter with a carbon filter. Carbon filters can be very effective at removing many toxins. But the key to their effectiveness is to make sure that the filters are changed frequently and disposed of properly.

The next rule of thumb is, wherever possible, consume only unprocessed foods. Fruits and vegetables should be organically grown, or at least washed, wherever possible. If you grow anything around your home, do not use commercially available pesticides.

Third, minimize your exposure around the home. Start with cleaning out your garage and your cabinets, removing all toxic cleaners and chemicals. Most towns have hazardous waste disposal—make sure you participate.

Lastly, stop using commercial lawn products with pesticides and weedkillers. There are now great natural alternatives. We spend so much time around our homes, breathing the air, walking along the soil, and so do our pets. Be more careful here immediately. There are now many available products, which are far safer than traditional commercial products.

But don’t simply fall for the trap of “green”, environmentally safe”, etc; really read labels. Go to websites, learn, ask questions. If we all do this, we will create a far safer world for our children! So what if it’s not perfect? Just do better every day and you’ll be much better off.

Is My Treatment Actually Helping?

Is my treatment actually helping is a common question? The real measure of your treatment progress often times comes down to the examination skills of your doctor.

This is one of the questions we get quite often not only from patients but also from physicians and physical therapists who are new at treating patients with chronic pain and peripheral neuropathy.

It’s also very important to understand one of the basic concepts common to many patients with the most common types of pain is that laboratory and diagnostic tests are often completely normal. Sometimes, there are only very slight abnormalities which are misinterpreted or remain a point of confusion for both the doctor and the patient.

There are also tests like EMGs and nerve conduction studies, and sometimes even these are normal or nearly so. All of this makes accurately evaluating effective neuropathy and pain treatments a real specialty.

Let me share a secret with you. The real measure of your treatment progress often times comes down to the examination skills of your treating clinician. Even despite extensive technology, a good examination is still the most important element of getting great care!

Furthermore your doctor must have excellent record keeping systems so he or she can retrieve your information on a moments notice.

Some of the things that we check for are really quite simple. Things like your range of motion, sensation to touch, temperature, and vibration. Also your ability to walk on your heels and toes will be tested. All of these things can tell us so much about your progress.

Yes, sometimes you will need more diagnostic tests to confirm your progress. But, there is still no substitute for a very thorough initial examination as well as thorough and periodic follow-up examinations.

You should always feel completely comfortable with your doctor and her examination skills. If not, find somebody else. Ask questions but most especially ask what the answers to those questions mean. You have every right to expect honest answers.
