About Vitamin B3

Vitamin B3, or niacin, is a nutrient that, like all vitamins, is essential to health, life and just feeling great! Vitamin B3 helps our bodies convert food into energy, burn fat properly, and is largely responsible for helping us feel energized!

Did you know that vitamin B3 is a common ingredient in *energy drinks?

The reason for this is simple. Without vitamin B3, or niacin, our body is unable to function. For many patients, it is lacking due to poor diet. Consuming a diet high in processed foods is likely to be low in niacin. Consuming alcohol can also lower vitamin B3 levels too.

In the neuropathy clinic, mild deficiencies of niacin are probably relatively common. Frank niacin deficiency can cause the disease called pellagra. Pellagra is disease characterized by the three D’s: diarrhea, dermatitis, and dementia.

In very severe niacin deficiencies, significant changes occur to the nervous system.

These changes can show up as psychiatric symptoms and, as we mentioned earlier, dementia or brain disease. More commonly, especially in modern society, are lower levels of niacin then are optimal, possibly making worse some very common conditions, including high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome.

A proper diet should include a good food sources of niacin. Many nuts are also high in niacin. Avocado and shiitake mushrooms are also high in niacin. Vitamin B3 as niacinamide is also a common ingredient in many multivitamins and other dietary supplements.

Since niacin is available in two different common forms (niacin and niacinamide), we recommend often advise patients to consume both forms in small amounts. The reason for this is they will tend to act somewhat differently, both having beneficial effects.

Measuring vitamin B3 levels requires a little more work than a simple blood test. Blood tests for niacin are often unreliable, so special urine tests need to be performed.

Like so many nutrients, it is important to remember that diet must be the number one method of obtaining proper nutrition. It is also critical to understand that each nutrient is just like a key instrument in a symphony.

And just like a symphony does not work when one instrument does not play properly, the same is true in nutrition–especially in pain & neuropathy nutrition!

* [which we never advise due to potential irregular heart rhythms which can be dangerous or even fatal].

Your Health and Vitamin B2

Let’s talk about your health and vitamin B2. Do know what a vitamin is? By definition, a vitamin is something our bodies can’t make on their own so we must get from our diet. These are also means vitamins are essential to life!
Deficiencies, poor absorption, or, sometimes just low vitamin levels due to diet and illnesses can make us feel just lousy. But sometimes they can make us sick—or even kill us!

Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is a key player in neuropathy treatment too! This yellowish substance is easily destroyed by light. It’s found in leafy vegetables, almonds, beans and peas, organ meats, and mushrooms.  This is really important in neuropathy treatment, because B2 is a key co-factor.

Co-factors are non-protein chemicals that bind to or join up with larger molecules in the body to make them work. And in this case, the vitamin B2 co factors called FAD and FMN are responsible for a wide variety of key body functions. This is crucial universally but especially for neuropathy patients, because FAD and FMN help us burn or metabolize our food efficiently.

Although we need only a little every day, not getting enough, or not absorbing it due to intestinal issues can cause symptoms ranging from fatigue, to cracked scaly skin, and inflammation of the mouth and tongue.

In fact, one of the classic signs of deficiency is what’s called angular chelosis—where cracks appear at the corner of your mouth. This is critical to be aware of, because neuropathy can be associated with intestinal diseases, and things like colitis and alcohol abuse. Diabetes (so often part of neuropathy), heart disease, and taking some medications, including birth control pills, can raise the need for this key nutrient.

Higher doses of riboflavin are used to treat migraines and even some eye diseases. In neuropathy and pain treatment, we find B2 or riboflavin supplementation is often needed to provide maximum health benefits. As we have discussed many times before, our preferred general diet supplement is the fully balanced multi-nutrient available in our office or on-line called Metabolic Support Formula.

Lastly, always remember the foundation of good nutrition is obtained by following the free NeuropathyDR Diet Plan. This diet and lifestyle will also help you immensely to feel and look your very best!

Let’s Talk About Eating Smart

Let’s talk about eating smart. One of the things that most patients with neuropathy—and many patients with chronic pain—eating smart by keeping well-fueled and well-hydrated goes a long way towards possibly reducing symptoms and improving the quality of life! Now, the reasons for this are many, and paying better attention to basic body needs dramatically improves the function of our brain and nervous system and thus how we feel.

Fotolia 39693338 M 188x300 Eating Smart to Improve Neuropathy and Chronic Pain

Paying better attention to basic body needs dramatically improves the function of our brain and nervous system

There are a couple of basic rules that serve most neuropathy and chronic pain patients very well.

First, let’s talk a little about water consumption. An easy rule of thumb is to consume one half your body weight in ounces during a 24-hour period. So if we weigh a hundred and eighty pounds, we should drink ninety ounces of water (or non-alcohol liquids) in a 24-hour period. Remember, coffee, tea, and alcohol can cause us to lose fluid more rapidly, so go easy here. Under no circumstances should diet or other soft drinks be consumed.

Next, the mainstay or proper fueling is eating every 2 to 3 hours maximum. Getting used to smaller meals, and adding low-carbohydrate snacks such as several nuts or one half of an apple or other low-carb fruit can help us feel much better. The reason for this is it helps us maintain normal blood sugar levels and helps us burn fat more efficiently. If you are NOT insulin dependent or on diabetes medication, intermittent fasting may actually be beneficial. Learn way more about diet with the ND Diet Plan.

Eating more frequently as long as it is low in carbs (except within an hour HEAVY exercise) makes us feel better—and helps fuel us much more efficiently.

Carb control is also what helps us fight things like diabetes and metabolic syndrome—that, as you already know, complicate many health problems and make neuropathy and pain worse.

Like everything, there are exceptions to these rules. For example, if you’re insulin-dependent, you need to match your insulin dosage against your carbohydrate consumption very carefully.

Likewise, if you suffer from kidney or heart disease, you may need to be more careful with fluid consumption. Always follow your doctor’s orders. Try these simple suggestions starting today, and see how much better you may feel within just a few days!

Make Better Treatment Decisions

It was not that long ago that neuropathy and chronic pain patients had very few treatment options. Now though, how can we all make better treatment decisions? For a very long time, health professionals just focused on drug therapy to calm neuropathy and pain symptoms.

Physical Therapy

When patients take action, lose weight, become more active, and cut out sugars and processed foods, their pain and “idiopathic” neuropathy often starts to improve!.

In fact, many patients AND their own doctors still believe this is the only approach to neuropathy and pain treatment. But you know better, and that is why you are here!

We now know that there is a place for active treatment in many forms of pain, especially neuropathy.

For example, we know the most common form of neuropathy is “idiopathic neuropathy” meaning, by definition, “no known cause”. Many cases formerly called “idiopathic” are, in fact, due to metabolic syndrome, an issue for many in modern society that, over many years, creates too much body fat and not enough lean muscle. This is sometimes still called pre-diabetes because without better lifestyle, food and activity decisions, many patients with metabolic syndrome will become diabetic!

*Drug-only neuropathy therapy alone will not change this.

But the good news is that when patients apply their own decisions to take action, lose weight, become more active, and cut out sugars and processed foods, their “idiopathic” may begin to improve, especially while using an active treatment system.

The sad part is, many doctors and patients still attempt to treat just with drugs to calm the symptoms like tingling, numbness and burning so many neuropathy patients suffer from. Worse yet, when patients are given high blood pressure or cholesterol lowering medication to treat metabolic syndrome this form of neuropathy can actually worsen!

Since 2008, we at NeuropathyDR have lead the way in informing neuropathy and chronic pain patients the impact their own health care and lifestyles decisions have upon their quality of life, and more! In the whole scheme of things, this approach to neuropathy treatment is relatively new.

So, what is a patient or their family to choose? Simply, we think patients need to learn all they can about real health! Real health comes from deciding to work a little more on it every day!

And, like it or not, the older we get, the more we all need to be proactive about our health—not less!

Know that our team of docs is with you all the way!

Your Toxic Exposures

One of the things that is new to many patients especially those who suffer from peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain is the effect that your toxic exposures can have.

For example, the average person is exposed to numerous chemicals everyday in our air, water, and even our food. Some of these substances may pass through the body harmlessly, yet others may linger in fatty tissues, creating a whole host of health problems. But this is tricky. With rare exception, most accumulations are slow or insidious. Exceptions could be exposure to large amounts of acute toxins, such as solvents.

Note these toxins can be anything from radon gas in the house to chemical pesticide residues on food, to antibiotic residues, which are now commonly present in water. Living healthily means you need to avoid as much toxic exposure from your environment and food as possible. So let’s talk about some of the most important things we can do.

Perhaps the most important source of toxins you can correct immediately is filtering your drinking water. We strongly recommend a pitcher or whole house type water filter with a carbon filter. Carbon filters can be very effective at removing many toxins. But the key to their effectiveness is to make sure that the filters are changed frequently and disposed of properly.

The next rule of thumb is, wherever possible, consume only unprocessed foods. Fruits and vegetables should be organically grown, or at least washed, wherever possible. If you grow anything around your home, do not use commercially available pesticides.

Third, minimize your exposure around the home. Start with cleaning out your garage and your cabinets, removing all toxic cleaners and chemicals. Most towns have hazardous waste disposal—make sure you participate.

Lastly, stop using commercial lawn products with pesticides and weedkillers. There are now great natural alternatives. We spend so much time around our homes, breathing the air, walking along the soil, and so do our pets. Be more careful here immediately. There are now many available products, which are far safer than traditional commercial products.

But don’t simply fall for the trap of “green”, environmentally safe”, etc; really read labels. Go to websites, learn, ask questions. If we all do this, we will create a far safer world for our children! So what if it’s not perfect? Just do better every day and you’ll be much better off.

Simple Steps to Better Foot Care

As you probably know, peripheral neuropathy most commonly afflicts the feet first. And most adults suffer from some type of foot problem as well. But there really are some simple steps to better foot care you can begin to do today!

How well do you take care of your feet?

Initially, better foot care comes something as a shock to most patients. Too many of us ignore our feet until we have a painful or debilitating disorder like neuropathy.

You see, foot pain and neuropathy is much more than pain, tingling and numbness.

Often times there are changes in sensation which affect your balance and your ability to walk normally. Commonly, the shape of your feet will change due to muscle weakness over time or after an injury. This why some of the orthotics you see above can be so very helpful.

There are also changes in skin texture. Patients with peripheral neuropathy and foot pain often find their feet become cold. Cracking of the skin becomes more common. Unfortunately, infections like toenail fungus can happen too. Foot ulcers can be devastating and lead to amputation or worse.

So let’s talk about some of the simple things that you can do on a daily basis to help proper foot care.

The first thing you can do is to make sure that your shoes fit properly. Do not ignore things such as overgrown toenails, which can affect proper shoe fit. If you’re diabetic, your nails should be professionally trimmed by a podiatrist at least once per month.

Next, consider using either light wool, silk or microfiber socks. These socks do not trap moisture, which can make infections and perspiration problems worse.

Finally, be very careful in your choice of bath and shower soaps. Be sure to thoroughly dry and visually inspect the tops and bottoms of your feet every day! There are natural products such as those containing Tea tree oil, which are beneficial in helping prevent athlete’s foot and common fungal infections.

In terms of care, we commonly advise use of our #NDGen, #wearablelaser and #orthotics all of which you can see in our clinics or HERE In Our Self-Care Store

Take better care of your feet every day, ask for our help early on and do not let issues go untreated or fester. and foot pain as well as #neuropathytreatment success will also be easier!

Can CoQ10 Really Help With Aging and Pain?

If we could guarantee you improved health, less disease and a better aging process by taking CoQ10, would you do it? When we ask questions like these, it’s always amazing the types of answers we get. Here are just a few responses we’ve heard over the years.

  • How are you going to guarantee that?
  • Why should I trust you?
  • Can you prove it?
  • Is it free?

Now, those may sound like funny answers, but trust us, we’ve heard many of them. So, here we’ll try to give you a hint of how we answer these types of questions. Then, we’ll give you a little background on what CoQ10 is, where it comes from and why it’s beneficial.

Answering the Questions about CoQ10

How are you going to guarantee that?

We’re going to be perfectly honest here. We can’t guarantee that CoQ10 will beyond the shadow of a doubt help every person. We wish! If it were that simple, we’d be handing this stuff out like sugar cubes. After all, our main goal is to help you become as healthy as you can be.

We can tell you, however, that CoQ10 has been studied for its benefits for many years and has shown definite correlation to improved health status. Some individuals have seen their health status improve immensely and others have felt and seen the difference in a worn-out body headed for disease turn around.

So, though we can’t offer a 100% guarantee of effectiveness on all people, we can promise you the likelihood of improved functionality is far greater than doing nothing at all. Also, here’s a last food for thought.

When you take a new pill or a handful, do you have a guarantee then?

Why should I trust you?

We have proven ourselves to you over the years. Our information and education is solid and substantiated in proof throughout our website. Also, the evidence we present can be researched, just like we have done, and is backed up by solid research. We stand behind our recommendations and our word.

Can you prove it?

Yes. We can prove that CoQ10 has helped thousands of people in a variety of ways. Everyone may not be affected the same because each person is looking for a different success. If we are asked does it help everyone, our answer would likely be no because a 100% is seldom true.

What we can tell you is that CoQ10 has great potential to make a significant improvement in your life. There have been hundreds of studies over decades that show many benefits. If you are in your middle years and beyond, you stand a good chance of seeing even greater benefits.

Is it free?

Yes, believe it or not, we do get this question. So we say, “Are most things?” Would you ask a car dealer if that cherry red convertible is free? No, it’s not free, but it is cheaper than being sick and it’s often cheaper than having to buy medications. Besides, you don’t know if those are going to work either.

Now let’s take a quick look at the potential of CoQ10 in your life.

What can CoQ10 do for You?

This is a natural occurring compound in your body. It helps many important functions. The easiest way to understand it is like this:

  • We have little mitochondria in our cells (a bunch of them).
  • Mitochondria help with respiration and energy. (Kind of important).
  • CoQ10 is stored in these little mitochondria.

Now here’s what CoQ10 does:

  • Helps generate energy for our cells (without this we’re in trouble).
  • It’s an antioxidant that protects cells against toxins and other damage like oxidative damage (superhero).
    • If this doesn’t work, disease can easily set appear.
  • Believed to help your body in many ways:
    • Fertility (protects eggs)
    • Skin (protects against internal and external damage)
    • Lessen migraine/headache potency (helps decrease inflammation)
    • Exercise (improved energy and respiration means improved performance)
    • Diabetes (may help with insulin resistance)
    • Heart (protects against oxidative damage and decreases inflammation)
    • Cancer (protects against oxidative damage which causes cancer)
    • Pain (maybe, since it decreases inflammation)

Is CoQ10 for You?

Honestly, this is a question only you can answer. Is it worth it to you so you can feel better, maybe prevent disease and have a better life?

If your answer is yes, you can check out our store where we do have this available. We would also like to invite you over to join our Facebook group where we talk about an assortment of topics. If you have a question, feel free to ask!

Acetyl-L-Carnitine – Can It Help You?

Most people don’t have a clue what acetyl-L-carnitine is. Perhaps, you see it on the vitamin shelf and think, “yeah, whatever,” if you notice it at all. However, this supplement has been getting a lot of attention for its potential benefits.

As with any supplement, medicine or treatment, there’s no one-stop-shop or magic pill for everyone and everything. We’re all different and have varied chemistries. Consequently, this means things can act differently in our bodies. That’s why it’s impossible for someone to say, “this is a 100% effective.”

That’s also why it’s important for all of us to be wise stewards of our own health. For this reason, here at neuropathydr.com we enjoy sharing potentially helpful information in hopes we can help you.

Acetyl-L-carnitine is one of those hidden gems with the potential to help many. Now, we’d like to introduce you.

How Can Acetyl-L-Carnitine Help You?

To begin with, acetyl-l-carnitine is an amino acid. In case you don’t remember from science class, amino acids are the building blocks for proteins. However, this amino acid acts differently. Acetyl-l-carnitine helps our nerve cells utilize energy and function at peak levels.

We won’t go in depth about the details of how. More importantly, we want to focus on what it can do.

Based on research across decades, acetyl-l-carnitine has emerged as effective in supporting optimal brain health. It also helps memory and much more. Beyond the brain, it has shown great promise for impacting neuropathy pain, nerve functioning, energy levels and still more.

Here is just a small list of areas acetyl-l-carnitine is being or has been researched for its beneficial properties. These have shown varied levels of effectiveness, but all are believed to show promise though more research continues to be needed.

  • Memory improvement
  • Increased energy
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Poor brain functions due to certain causes
  • Nerve pain (neuropathy)
  • ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression
  • Fragile X – decreased hyperactive behaviors
  • Fibromyalgia – improved pain

And so much more.

With the potential of this supplement, we would be doing our readers a disservice if we didn’t share.

So, is this a guarantee it will help you? No. Is there a chance acetyl-l-carnitine could help you, definitely! If you’d like to give this supplement a try today, we do offer it here solo and in topical and as part of our Metabolic Dose Packs. (REMEMBER: Reception Room Members SAVE 10% Every Day!).

As with any supplement be sure to check with your physicians before beginning.

We’d love to have you join us over on Facebook. We share a variety of information and always welcome your feedback.

Allithiamine – Help Your Pain and Your Brain

If you are ready to help your pain, then we’d like for you to meet allithiamine. You may be saying to yourself right now, “what in the heck is allithiamine?” Well, that’s a good question because this is not a word you hear everyday. However, if you would like to help your pain and your brain, this is something you want to learn about.

Allithiamine is a fat-soluble form of the popular B-1 vitamin. The difference is the B-1 you typically buy and hear about is water soluble. Our supplemental allithiamine is fat soluble. That makes a lot of difference in what it can do for your body.

Water soluble vitamins are only partially absorbed and then excreted in the urine. They do not stay around in the body for very long. Fat soluble vitamins, however, hang around in the body much longer and are able to have greater effects. This can be a valuable asset to patients suffering with an unhealthy nervous system and suffering with deficiency symptoms. If you are interested in feeling better and learning to help your pain, keep reading.

Allithiamine occurs naturally in foods of the allium family. Specifically, those include onions, garlic, and leeks. These foods have long been known to be beneficial to your health. Sometimes it can be hard to eat enough of the correct foods to help your pain and nervous system. This supplement form is often suggested for patients whose intake of B-1 sources is insufficient or  if the water soluble form is not providing the expected benefits. If you’re deficient this is a great product for helping you raise your B-1 level. It really can help your pain and improve mental clarity.

But, that bears the question…

Why Is Your Allithiamine Low?

So, why might your B-1 levels be low? There are many reasons this can occur. Here are just a few examples:

    • High carbohydrate intake – B-1 is used to metabolize these.
    • Chronic alcohol use
    • Hyperthyroidism
    • Severe infection
    • Eating a lot of processed foods
    • Many medications
    • Increasing age

As you see there are many reasons. This only scratches the surface of the causes.

Can Allithiamine Help Your Pain AND Your Brain?

A lot of times, doctors and nutritionists will recommend trying to raise your levels naturally at first. This is always best practice, of course. Besides the allium family, other foods high in thiamine consist of nuts, oats, dried beans and peas, asparagus, kale, spinach, broccoli, liver, and eggs. There are more, but this is a good list to get started with.

These foods may help to raise your B-1, but in some cases that is not enough. That’s when supplements may come into play. The benefits of supplementation when needed can be:

  • Improved nervous system health
  • Improved brain health
  • Increased energy levels
  • Improved peripheral neuropathy symptoms
  • Decreased leg cramps
  • Improved depression, anxiety, confusion

And the list could go on and on.

What Can You Do About B-1 Deficiency? How Do You Help Your Pain And Your Brain?

If you think you may suffer with or have been told you do have a thiamine (B-1) deficiency, we advise you to speak to us about allithiamine. This is a supplement proven to help many who have taken it. It is fat soluble and therefore, stays in your body longer.

For your reference, the oral and topical formulas we suggest are in the store here, in case you would like to purchase them today. Just so you know these formulas are free of wheat, corn, soy, yeast and phenol which are common food and chemical allergens.

As with any supplement be sure to check with your physicians before beginning. Patients with active cancer or history of cancer or pregnant should always check with their doctors before beginning any new vitamins or treatment regimens especially allithiamine.

If you’d like to, please join us over on our Facebook page where we share varied information. We’d love to hear from you.
