Neuropathy Self-Diagnosis and Treatment

Ever heard the phrase “The man who represents himself has a fool for a client?” The dangers of self diagnosis and treatment of conditions like neuropathy could cost you your life.

While the old adage above is applied to the legal profession, the same can be said about patients who attempt to diagnose and treat their own illnesses and injuries. Especially when their symptoms indicate they’re dealing with something that could be serious.

The internet has made it easy for us to research our own health issues and become educated patients  but it has also made it easy to misdiagnose and inaccurately treat those medical conditions. Often from very unqualified information.

Now this may not be dangerous with a common cold, but if you have (or think you have):

–           Shingles

–           Diabetic neuropathy

–           Post-chemotherapy neuropathy

–           Guillian-Barre Syndrome

–           Peripheral neuropathy

You could be doing your body irreparable harm by not consulting a highly trained clinician, for proper diagnosis and treatment.

By researching and treating on your own, you’re wasting valuable time and when you’re dealing with neuropathy or any condition that involves nerve damage, because so often you don’t have time to waste.

The delay in obtaining medical treatment could make a small problem much, much worse.  Once that window for early treatment is gone, you can never get it back.  Treating on your own is an excellent example of being penny wise and pound foolish.

Here are just a few of the things that can happen when you diagnose and treat on your own:

–           You could be wrong about the diagnosis and taking medications that you don’t need.  That not only means that you’re not “curing” yourself, you could be making matters  worse.

–          You could be right about the diagnosis but taking the wrong medications.

–          You could be right about the diagnosis but need prescription medication in the appropriate strength to address your symptoms.

–          You could be putting yourself at risk for serious drug interactions with other medicines you’re taking (especially if you’re taking over the counter medicines and supplements without medical supervision).

–          You could be fixing one problem with over the counter medications but making another problem worse or even creating a new problem.

–          You could be missing the root cause of the problem – particularly in cases of neuropathy.

–          Finally, you could be putting yourself at risk for life theatening damage.

You Need to Seek Professional Care

Treating on your own is a classic example of being penny wise and pound foolish. You may save a little money up front but it’s going to cost you more in the long run when your health care provider has to play catch up and try to fix the harm done by delaying proper treatment.

If you have symptoms of any of the illnesses we talked about above (especially diabetes), it is vital that you seek professional medical care.

Early treatment provided by a specialist familiar and specifically trained with peripheral neuropathy will make it much easier for your body to repair itself and lessen your chance of developing permanent nerve damage as a result of peripheral neuropathy.

Don’t be afraid to ask for our guidance.

Before you try to diagnose and treat yourself, we hope you’ll consider the potential harm you could doing to your body.  And make the right choice – seek professional diagnosis and treatment.

Time is of the essence.

Risks vs Benefits

Male Doc Elderly Male Patient 300x199 Risks vs BenefitsNeuropathy & Pain Treatment Risks vs Benefits

Here is a proven fact. All of healthcare in fact you could argue most of life our “decisions” are made pitting risks versus benefits.  As adults we ask ourselves and teach our children, do our actions today set us up for a healthier and better future or not?

What if we take no action at all? Is that better than doing something?

All of these are decisions that you need to make along with your healthcare providers on a regular basis. You see everything we do is risks versus benefits. This is so important to understand.  Make no mistake about modern science and medicine have developed amazing treatments. This also includes what we do here. We are continually working on treatments to help neuropathy and chronic pain patients.

Do YOU Always ASK your clinicians Is the cure is worse than the problem?

So, what if instead, we as both doctors and patients took a very strong look at the underlying causes of so much of illness and treated those first?

You know, all those things just get us into trouble. Poor dietary habits especially over the long haul, inactivity, cigarette smoking, not paying attention to stress and emotional health. I’m sure you get the picture.

What if we did all of those things before we prescribed for patients neuropathy and chronic pain treatment drugs, or surgical procedures that could cause significant harm.

For example, if doctors and patients paid more careful attention and worked together just like we do in NeuropathyDR Treatment Centers on weight loss and lifestyle, far less patients would be placed on statin medication.

Statin medications as you probably know are one major cause of neuropathy..

What if instead of injecting patients, and suggesting invasive procedures early on what if we both make sure as doctors and patients that all conservative treatment options were exhausted first?

You already know the answer…

You understand, as your NeuropathyDR clinician does, that’s all good neuropathy and chronic pain treatment is risks vs benefits!

So why not learn more today? Why not take actions that will help you live much more fully, without devastating side effects.

Make all your decisions about your neuropathy and chronic pain treatment very carefully!

Chronic Pain Answers- Reach Out And Look!

If you suffer from chronic pain the first thing you should do is reach out and look for answers.

mail 5 Chronic Pain Answers Reach Out And Look!

As a clinician, the most common problems that present to us in private practice usually involve the skeletal system. For example headaches and low back pain are the two most common chronic pain complaints heard by many primary care and medical practices.

This true for both acute or new health conditions and but especially chronic conditions.

Now I define chronic conditions as those that have lasted more than six months and have not effectively been treated or managed.

One only has to look at television ads and yes even newspapers from over hundreds of years ago to realize there is nothing new or unique here!

Let’s face it- some pains are just part of life. But when chronic pains and other annoying symptoms become long-term and interfere with our quality of live, they can have devastating consequences.

Now obviously, very little can be done about devastating accidents and injuries. Unfortunately this is a real and unpleasant fact. Bad things can and do happen to all of us.

So even though we know that the best way to prevent chronic disabling pain is to treat pain appropriately is from the beginning.

This involves much more than just medication. In fact this is a team effort.

Most of the time pain management should include some type of physical therapy. Physical therapy, chiropractic and other physical therapy is often extremely beneficial especially when applied early on for many types of chronic pain.

This does not mean that chronic pain is not treatable. It just becomes more difficult.

Chronic pain needs to be handled by very experienced physicians and physical therapists. In order to be truly effective long-term, a good portion of this care should include non-drug treatment methods.

And that is in fact what we do every day, all day long in our NeuropathyDR treatment centers.

So if you suffer from chronic pain the first thing you should do is reach out and look for answers.

Don’t take no for an answer until you have left no stone unturned!

The Importance of Having a Neuropathy Treatment System

Having a neuropathy treatment system to follow provides for more measurable neuropathy treatment results!

doctorguy 225x300 The Importance of Having a Neuropathy Treatment System

Always Ask your Clinician, “What Systems have you studied to treat my Neuropathy?”

One of the most frustrating things for patients and doctors alike is not having adequate treatment plans for patients who suffer from peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain.

Too often, a haphazard approach is taken both by patients and their professionals early on, and the net result is failure, or possibly worsening of the underlying neuropathy and chronic pain condition

But the good news is when specific formulas are followed, you know what to expect, and how to measure your progress.

For example, most patients who suffer from diabetic neuropathy know when they keep their fasting blood sugars within a healthy range, their neuropathy reacts much better.

Conversely, when blood sugars are out of control due to poor dietary systems the net result is worsening of their neuropathy.

And the same holds true for other facets of neuropathy treatment. For example having a personal system for regular, and scheduled exercise as well as stretching and rest can make a profound difference.

The timing of dietary supplements, and even medications can make a big difference. We know for example that regularity, in terms of time of day and spacing of dosages can make a huge difference for many neuropathy patients.

We also know that when treating with our homecare neuropathy treatment systems at specific times makes a huge difference and leads to bigger improvements in quality of life.

So if you find yourself not progressing as much as you would like, work more on a system and game plan for yourself.

Remember no two patients are the same. Some trial and error is necessary to find out what works best for you.

But the good news is having a neuropathy treatment system to follow provides for more measurable neuropathy treatment results!

What If You Choose The Wrong Neuropathy Professional?

Our best clinicians call us on a regular basis to talk about neuropathy treatment advances or helping special cases.

When I first started to teach about caring for neuropathy patients, I did so because almost every other method out there was inconsistent at best. Too often, neuropathy treatment was failing.

And this too often was because with rare exceptions, docs and PTs were not well educated in neuropathy treatment. Sure, there have been devices around for a long time.

But getting neuropathy patients really well again requires some incredible study and new skills! Skills that actually change and get better the more we use them.

Well, that has all changed thanks to our work at NeuropathyDR®. We set out to establish the finest network of neuropathy clinicians ever assembled.

Not unexpectedly, our clients are so grateful to be able to duplicate our neuropathy treatment results.

Even more so, our best clinicians call us on a regular basis to talk about neuropathy treatment advances or helping special cases.

So, there is much better neuropathy treatment available to more neuropathy patients than ever before!

What happens if you chose the wrong neuropathy treatment professional?

But how do you know if the health professional you choses is the right one?

Well, the best neuropathy professionals never hesitate to talk to you frankly, by phone or in person. So start there. If you cant have a good conversation and learn more about the clinic, go somewhere else!

Of course, your best bet is to choose a NeuropathyDR Clinic. Our clinicians are in constant learning mode, not just an occasional weekend seminar, and have myself as a consultant to help work on difficult cases, maybe even yours!

You’ll find our current clinicians listed here:

Neuropathy Warning: “Treat Your Body as a Temple, Not a Woodshed!”

Like many of life’s disruptions, neuropathy is a wake up call.

This is one of my favorite all time quotes from one of my first mentors, Jim Rohn. Jim is no longer of this world, but his words ring truer than ever. Jim was a powerful personal and business development expert, who was taught early in life that all of us need to study nutrition, along with the other the basic essentials of what makes us tick as human beings.

Like many of life’s disruptions, neuropathy is a wake up call. And it’s always an uninvited guest. But there are now many things we do know that you can use to help yourself. And one of these is to master how your body responds to better neuropathy care, just like your car!

Neuropathy is a disruption of our internal “machinery”. In our youth, we take so much for granted, as we accumulate miles, just like an older car we need more attention, expense, and yes, even better fuel.

You see, neuropathy is often a breakdown in the individual nerve cells that get overwhelmed or fail to recover from insults.

Now this could be anything from an accident to accompanying diseases. Maybe your family history and your genes paly a role too.

Good neuropathy care involves giving your body the best possible chance of recovery. And a huge part of that can be just by starting a nutrition “recovery” program. Too often though, we tend to be overwhelmed or confused when it comes to neuropathy nutrition.

Do you need a special diet? In a word, yes!

Use Neuropathy Treatment Tools Like Journaling for 7 days...

So how do we begin? I suggest that neuropathy patients begin with conscious eating. What this means is for 7 days, starting today, you log everything that goes into your mouth. And I mean gum, candy, cigars or whatever on a daily basis.

Be strict about this for one week. Then you can begin the path to better neuropathy results by better nutrition.

Once you have the basics, then we can work your game plan together for outstanding neuropathy treatment results!

What Caused My Neuropathy?

What Caused My Neuropathy?

One of the most common questions we get in our clinics is “What caused MY Neuropathy?” We spend a whole lot of time just trying to sort this one out.

Why? Because we know your results will be much better if we can just identify just what caused YOUR Neuropathy.

The more experience we get, the more I realize is that many times in the neuropathy treatment centers, the causes of neuropathy are actually several different things all interacting together.

Let me give you a common scenario.

This make believe patient is a guy, former athlete now has a sedentary job, he’s age 49, does not exercise at home at all. Unfortunately, eats lots of processed foods, very few vegetables, and loves a few beers with his steak dinners. He’s been eating like this 2-3 days a week since he started to make good money at work. He was put on statin (cholesterol) and blood pressure drugs 4 years ago, and was recently told by his doctor he may be “pre-diabetic”.

Now, he finds himself stumbling in the dark and his balance is off. He really got concerned when he couldn’t feel the carpet on the floor and his feet started to burn and tingle. Now they keep him up at night!

Our young patient has developed neuropathy. So, if you are a long time reader can you identify a least 3 possible causes?

OK, here goes: 1. Metabolic Syndrome or pre-diabetes can cause neuropathy, sometimes 10 years or more before diabetes is diagnosed! 2. His diet is low in fiber and antioxidants, maybe too much alcohol too.

Sometimes Called Pre-Diabetes Metabolic Syndrome is rampant in our society...

And lastly, he’s taking two classes of drugs that are known to cause neuropathy, even sometimes by themselves.

So, what has to be dealt with for our patient to really get better? You guessed it. Treatment of course will make him happy and more comfortable, but lasting health will be…you guessed it… a project that is life long!

The Very First Step In Neuropathy Treatment

Ever Feel Out Of Control With Your Neuropathy? You are NOT alone!

So often in the clinic we get to meet and care for people who are or have been seriously ill for quite some time. Sometimes they are in the middle of dealing with an illness, sometimes recovering and getting their lives “back on track”.

Neuropathy patients frequently ask me “What’s the fastest way to get better Dr Hayes?”

And what I have found is this. Simply establish a state or feeling of Control. On a regular basis. Now this can be moment to moment in crisis. But I can tell you that those neuropathy patients that make this part of their daily routines get better faster, sleep better, worry much less and generally regain that crucial sense of being in control.

Now of course much of what we face in illness is seemingly random. But recovering, just like dealing with problems in any area of life is about taking control of what you can, and releasing or letting go what we cannot.

But how do we do that? It can seem to be overwhelming!
What I have found to be very helpful for my patients and also myself of course is meditation.

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview the bestselling author of “The Alpha Chick” Mal Duane. Mal and I talked for some time about regaining a sense of control as it applies to dealing with chronic pain.

You can listen and watch a brief clip of that wonderful interview here too.

You see, too often in our crazy world we forget that our answers come from solitude, from doing less, not more! Now this can be relaxation, exercise, and hobbies too.

But meditation can put you in contact with your deep inner reserves that can help you beat neuropathy and vastly improve the condition of your health.

Some of our next articles will focus on meditation and your pain and neuropathy treatment success.

Let us know if you find this discussion helpful, as you are the reason we do what we do!

Neuropathy Treatments That Really Work!

Neuropathy Treatments That Really Work

Peripheral Neuropathy is the word your health care professionals use for the often condition that affects those parts of the body outside the brain and spinal cord.

Along with other forms of long standing pain, neuropathy is a major source of aggravation and loss of work. Billions of dollars a year are spent dealing with the devastation it can bring.

Twenty million plus people suffer from this condition, with several thousand new patients every year. And if we count the people who suffer from daily pain, that number well exceeds one hundred million.

There are many causes. The most serious are those inherited diseases. The most common problems though also bring along the complications of their causes like diabetes or cancer.

And here lies the secret answer to better helping our neuropathy patients! The best treatments target the problems that the underlying disease has caused!

I know you understand how miserable life with neuropathy can be because you are reading this article. Maybe it’s for yourself, maybe it’s for someone you love very much.

You have seen just how miserable it can be! For some, its loss of sleep and being able to do the things they love. For others, the prospect of facing yet another day or sleepless night of pain, tingling numbness and burning is terrifying.

You just don’t know what to do!

Recently, even major medication trials have been stopped because of poor neuropathy treatment results.

That is just why we are going to spend time in this next series of articles talking in detail about some real solutions to this huge problem.

But most importantly, real simple things you can do to help take charge of your health.

If I can help you in any way, please post your comments or visit our growing Facebook family of friends where we’ll be sharing all week long!

Chemotherapy Neuropathy “Cure?”

Cancer is one of the most persistent scourges of modern medicine.  Not only are the various types of cancer extremely dangerous, but the methods to combat them, including chemotherapy, can be aggressive to the point of heavily impacting a person’s health and quality of life. Hundreds of thousands of cancer patients in North America alone receive chemotherapy every year, and many of them experience damage to the peripheral nervous system—chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, or CIPN.

Like most neuropathy, chemotherapy-caused neuropathy shows up in the form of pain, numbness, tingling, and loss of temperature sensation, most commonly in the extremities.  Other symptoms, while less ubiquitous, are still common: loss of bladder control, constipation, loss of body awareness, and difficulty walking or standing.  Sometimes the condition is chronic, and will be a factor in the rest of a sufferer’s life.  In many cases, however, the pain and discomfort from chemotherapy-caused neuropathy can be effectively managed, allowing a cancer survivor to lead a normal, active life.

So what can you do to help protect yourself from chemotherapy-caused neuropathy?  First, report any unusual sensations, pain, or numbness to your doctor or a qualified NeuropathyDR® clinician.  Like any neuropathy, the sooner we identify a problem, the better we will be able to control your symptoms.  Let your chemotherapy provider know you might be experiencing a complication; in some cases, they may decide to postpone treatments to help your nerves recover.

Second, take steps to protect your peripheral nervous system, which is already under strain from the chemotherapy.  Wear gloves when performing manual labor.  Make sure your clothing and shoes do not rub against your skin and cause abrasions (loose clothing can aggravate neuropathy symptoms).  Work with a NeuropathyDR® clinician to develop a diet and exercise regimen that will contribute to overall nerve stimulation and health.  Perhaps most importantly, make sure to abide by your cancer doctor’s orders—managing the underlying condition is the most important factor in treating any kind of neuropathy.

Our patient, Joanne, knows firsthand how hard chemotherapy can be on the nervous system.  Joanne is a cancer survivor who, when she came to us, had been recovering from the effects of her chemotherapy for five years.  Along with most of the common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, Joanne complained of severe pain in her lumbar back, extreme stiffness in her neck and shoulders, and weakness in her legs.  Joanne’s pain, especially in her feet, was intense to the point of affecting her daily lifestyle.  She was taking medication for pain, but the medicine was marginally effective at best.

Our treatment plan for Joanne involved a combination of manual therapies to her spine, as well as  2 forms of electro-stimulation to her feet and hands.  We treated Joanne three times a week for five weeks; in only four weeks, Joanne was commenting that her symptoms had subsided dramatically. Immediately following each treatment, Joanne noticed a reduction in her pain level.  The pain and numbness in her feet subsided a whopping 65-70%!

In a thank-you note Joanne wrote us a long time after the completion of  the clinic portion of  her NeuropathyDR® treatment plan, Joanne told us she had been able to stop taking her pain medications and was feeling fine, almost entirely pain-free.  Her strength had begun to return, and her mobility improved as well.

Cold, burning and tingling, scaling skin and loss of sensation are unfortunate but treatable!

Joanne is a success story we are proud to have to our credit.   To be entirely honest, not many patients show the level of improvement we saw in Joanne in such a short time.  Even so, it goes to show that not only is there hope for cancer survivors who live with neuropathy pain, but in some cases the recovery can be swift and dramatic.  Everyone who experiences neuropathy can learn to manage their symptoms, and our treatment methods are highly effective.  If you suffer from CIPN or any other kind of neuropathy, contact us!  NeuropathyDR® can answer your questions and put you in touch with a specially-trained clinician who can help you get back to living at your best!
